NOVEMBER -24 (FRIDAY) at 11:00 am: GRAND OPENING OF THE “NATURE TRAIL” at OLD FIELD PRESERVE. Join us for the ribbon-cutting (by Chief Steward Joe Tansey) and then explore Lewisboro’s newest educational nature addition with naturalist Jim Nordgren, and see the diverse ecosystems at Old Field Preserve. Children (a nature treasure hunt) and adult programs (walk with naturalist) planned from 11-12:30. Refreshments will be served. We have received permission to park on the East side of Mead Street if the parking lot within the preserve is full. Old Field Preserve is on Mead Steet, Waccabuc, directly across from the intersection with Schoolhouse Road.
DECEMBER 2 (SAT) 10:00: KIDS NATURE CRAFTS PROGRAM, “Building Bluebird Houses”: “Building Bluebird Houses”. Kids learn about birds and their habitat as they construct bird houses with naturalist Jim Nordgren. Great holiday gifts! Onatru Farm, 99 Elmwood Rd, S Salem. Ages 5 and up. $25 fee. JAN 1st (MON) – 11:00, FIRST DAY HIKE. Start 2018 with a morning hike at Onatru Farm that features forest, open fields, marshes, pond, and remnants of an old foundation. Bring the family for this 1 hour, easy jaunt. Hot chocolate afterwards. Meet in parking lot at 99 Elmwood Road, South Salem. Led by Bobbe Stultz.
FEB 4th (SUN) – 1:00, MID WINTER SNOWSHOE/HIKE. Explore the winter beauty of Mountain Lakes Park in North Salem. We will snowshoe (or hike, if not enough snow) on moderately easy terrain. 1 ½ hrs ending with a bonfire, music and refreshments. Meet at office near park entrance off Hawley Road for info on exact starting place. (snowshoes not provided) Led by Peter Gross and Dan Welsh.
MAR 10 (SAT) – 1:00, MAPLE SUGARING IN LEWISBORO– Nature Walk: Join us as we walk the Brownell Preserve in Goldens Bridge and learn about the history of maple sugaring and its science. Taste the raw and finished product of Lewisboro maple syrup. 1 ½ hrs. Meet at Brownell parking lot, at end of Harriet Lane, off Rte 138 in Goldens Bridge. Led by Mike Surdej. Steady rain cancels.
APR 8 (SUN) – 1:00, HISTORY NATURE WALK. Walk the trail behind St. Paul’s Chapel and learn about Lewisboro’s namesake, John Lewis, the history of the parcel of land he donated for the church to be built upon, and more! Led by our town’s historian, Maureen Koehl. Meet in the Chapel’s parking lot, 313 Smith Ridge Rd., South Salem. Steady rain cancels.
APR 22nd (SUN) – 10:30, EARTH DAY PROGRAMS: celebrate Earth Day at Leon Levy Preserve with 2 events to choose from: Vernal Pool exploration for kids (and their parents) searching for tadpoles and other amphibians that inhabit these temporary pools of water. Led by Jim Nordgren. And, Adult hike through ravines and wetlands to the Black Mansion ruins. Led by Peggy Nordgren, rated moderate. REFRESHMENTS SERVED. 1 ½ hrs. Meet at Leon Levy Preserve parking lot, on route 123, ¼ south of Route 35. Steady rain cancels. …
